Cross-Appointed Faculty

Cross-appointed faculty are those with an interest in issues of women, gender, sexuality and related topics, who have officially joined the WGSS program through an individualized MOU between their department chair and the WGSS director.  These program faculty are empowered to make decisions, particularly in votes on promotion and tenure, and usually serve on WGSS committees, teach WGSS classes and classes that carry the WGSS marker.  Their appointment term is four years. Alyssa is a second-year Master’s student in the WGSS program. She graduated with her BA in English; Philosophy; and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies in December 2021 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Alyssa is interested in researching the presence of and reactions to women and other marginalized groups in comics and comic-related media. Her other interests include the experience of death anxiety in the US and how it relates to the various facets of identity across different populations, the increasingly gendered nature of death care, and advocacy for the adoption of environmentally friendly body disposition techniques. Alyssa enjoys creating fun makeup looks, listening to music, gaming, and reading in her spare time.

Sope is a second year MA student in the WGSS program. They graduated from Appalachian State University in 2020 with a BFA in Art Education K-12 and a BA in Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies. Sope completed their first three years of beginning teaching at the elementary school level, teaching students in grades K-5. Sope’s research interests include methods of decolonizing the classroom, humanimal relations, and bodily politics in relation to clay/ceramics (all separate interests currently). In their free time, Sope enjoys collecting Pokemon cards, spending time with animals, and doing crossword puzzles.

Megan is a first year MA student in the WGSS department at UNCG. She graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with her BA in Women’s and Gender Studies with a double minor in Latina/o Studies and Social and Economic Justice. Megan’s research interests include interrogating the Wellness Industrial Complex as it relates to gender, race, class, and anti-fatness. She also has a research background in Latina Feminism, Latina Literature, and Queer Families. In her free time, Megan enjoys running, powerlifting, camping, hiking with her dog Max, and going to concerts.

Bree is a first-year MA student in the WGSS department. She graduated from UNCG with her BA in Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies and International & Global Studies in May 2023. Bree is deeply interested in transnational feminist perspectives that encompass the scholarship of women & queer people of color with a special focus on issues centering on Black and Indigenous voices. Bree’s other academic interests include queer history, collectivism, and structural deconstruction. In her free time, Bree enjoys reading, listening to podcasts, and spending time with friends and family.

Claudia is a double major in WGSS and History with a concentration in Public History. Her research interests are focused on early American women’s and LGBTQ+ history. Claudia is graduating Spring 2024, with hopes to enter a masters program beginning in the following fall. This spring, she will be doing an independent study project with Dr. Mandy Cooper about lesbian history in Greensboro. She plans to create a public exhibit piece that showcases her research on this topic. Claudia has a background working in various youth-oriented nonprofits and political campaigns. She interned for the North Carolina Democratic Party in both the 2016 and 2018 elections. When not working or at school, Claudia enjoys reading, cooking, and playing with her cat, Suzanne.

Affiliate Faculty

Affiliate faculty are those with an interest in issues of women, gender, sexuality and related topics and sometimes teach classes that carry the WGSS marker. These affiliated faculty do not participate in decision-making, though they may choose to serve on committees, or be involved in the program in other ways. Faculty may serve as cross-appointed for a time, then step back to affiliate status to make time for other commitments, or vice versa.
