Congratulations to Aries Powell, senior graduate assistant and second year Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies MA student, for being selected for a Cooper-DuBois Fellowship for 2020. Sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts, the Department of English, and the Center for Black Digital Research at Penn State University , the fellowship is for Black scholars seeking acceptance into the university’s dual PhD in English and African American and Diaspora Studies. The program of several sessions about African American Literary, Cultural, and Rhetorical Studies. Over a weekend, participants will discover new developments in the field, learn all about the dual degree program, workshop their applications for admission, and hear from current graduate students and professors. In the past, having lunch together and experiencing fellowship with other people has been an essential part of the program. This year, although attendees will be miles apart on zoom, time has been allotted for everyone to continue having virtual lunches together.

Aries is especially excited by the opportunity to build relationships with other young scholars coming into the field of African American and Diaspora Studies and to work with faculty at Penn State University to improve their application for the program. Working at the intersection of literary scholarship and African American Studies is particularly interesting to Aries as a Black Feminist Scholar. WGSS is incredibly proud of Aries and wishes them luck moving forward!
