Risa Applegarth: Recipient of Teaching Excellence Award

Dr. Risa Applegarth has been awarded the 2015-2016 Mary Settle Sharp Award for Teaching Excellence!

Dr. Applegarth is an associate professor in the Department of English and teaches in the Women’s and Gender Studies Program.  When asked about her approach, Dr. Applegarth responded, “Whether teaching writing, rhetoric, or literature, I work to involve students in writing as a knowledge-making practice by creating responsive environments that demand their serious intellectual engagement.  Teaching inquiry means engaging students in the messy business of posing a question, investigating avenues for answering that question, and weighing the strengths and weaknesses of multiple ways of coming to know.”
