beyond binary data: How (mis)information & Statistics shape transgender life

Join Dr. Avery Everhart, Asst. Professor, Geography University of British Columbia for this talk that seeks to intervene in the zeitgeist surrounding trans people, trans communities, and trans rights. Dr. Everhart, a trans health researcher and geographer (graduate of UNCG!), will offer methodological critiques of the quantitative analyses that produce the statistical sound bites on trans life that circulate in various media ecologies.

The talk will address how misinformation circulates and how activists and advocates within and outside of trans communities might intervene. Dr. Everhart will explore how we might move from reactionary modes of engagement to alternative means of building power and knowledge outside of mainstream media and politics.
