SUMMARY:TRANSFORMING BACH: queerPassion\, Pride and Community-Building at Bachfest LeipZig
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kailan Rubinoff\, Associate Professor of Musicology in the School of Music and Cross-appointed Faculty in Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies to talk about how she used the Linda Arnold Carlisle Faculty Grant to support her research.  \n\n\n\nWith the support of the grant\, she conducted ethnographic research among the QueerPassion musicians and audience members at the BachFest Leipzig in June 2025.  \n\n\n\nThe QueerPassion is a reimagining of J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion with a new libretto by Thomas Höft that highlights stories of violence against LGBTQ+ people in the eighteenth century and recent times.  \n\n\n\nJoin us April 1st at noon in the Macdonald Room/Curry 231.

SUMMARY:beyond binary data: How (mis)information & Statistics shape transgender life
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Avery Everhart\, Asst. Professor\, Geography University of British Columbia for this talk that seeks to intervene in the zeitgeist surrounding trans people\, trans communities\, and trans rights. Dr. Everhart\, a trans health researcher and geographer (graduate of UNCG!)\, will offer methodological critiques of the quantitative analyses that produce the statistical sound bites on trans life that circulate in various media ecologies. \n\n\n\nThe talk will address how misinformation circulates and how activists and advocates within and outside of trans communities might intervene. Dr. Everhart will explore how we might move from reactionary modes of engagement to alternative means of building power and knowledge outside of mainstream media and politics.

It is a free\, four-day\, in-person experience for student activists\, scholars and creatives across Greensboro universities to co-create a political home rooted in queer\, feminist\, and anti-racist politics.\n\nAttendees will draw from women of color feminist and queer liberatory traditions to build community with each other\, learn about past and current advocacy work in Greensboro and beyond\, grow their leadership skills for engaging in political projects of their own design\, and establish coalitional networks to uplift anti-oppressive and just work at their home institutions.\n\nParticipants will leave the program empowered\, connected\, and ready to respond to the present moment with creativity and critical hope.\n\nWho We Want in this Space:\n\n 	Undergraduate students from any of the six colleges and universities in Greensboro\, North Carolina (UNCG\, NCAT\, Guilford\, Bennett\, Greensboro\, and GTCC)\n 	Those new and those experienced in feminist and queer thought and movement work.\n 	Student activists\, scholars\, and creatives willing and committed to dreaming\, scheming\, and playing together to create more just and equitable presents and futures in our shared community.\n\nSCHEME: A Queer Feminist Summer Convergence envisions a cohort of students who represent the expansive backgrounds and histories present in Greensboro\, North Carolina. Therefore\, we welcome and expect a range of gender identities\, racial identities\, sexualities\, bodies\, cultures\, nationalities\, and economic and educational backgrounds in the space. We will center the knowledge and experiences of those most impacted by the oppressions we will be learning about\, and we will cultivate a mutually supportive space for dreaming together.
