Sally and Alan Cone WGSS Undergraduate Major Scholarship

Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduates; declared Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies major; completion of WGS 250; GPA of at least 3.0

Each year, one $1,500 scholarship is available to an undergraduate WGSS major. Selection will be made on the basis of need, academic standing, and commitment to WGSS.

The application should include:

  • an essay of no more than 500 words that states, clearly and compellingly, the applicant’s goals as a WGSS major and the place of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies in the applicant’s development.  You may also wish to describe your financial need, life/work experience, and intellectual curiosity or motivation. You may provide any additional information you would like the scholarship committee to know.
  • a signature of support from a UNCG faculty member.
  • a completed application.

Applications are due April 15th for the following fall.

Undergraduate Major Application

Sally and Alan Cone WGSS Graduate Major Scholarship

Eligibility: Rising 2nd-year M.A. student in WGSS; completion of WGS 650; GPA of at least 3.0

Each year, one $1500 scholarship is available to a rising second-year M.A. student in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Selection will be made on the basis of academic standing and the clarity of the link between the student’s academic program and career goals.

The application should include:

  • a copy of the student’s graduate transcript
  • a letter of no more than 1200 words that clearly explains the links between the student’s focus and plan of study in the Master’s program and her or his career goals. You may also wish to discuss your financial need, life/work experience, and intellectual curiosity or motivation.
  • a signature of support from a UNCG faculty member.
  • a completed application.

Applications are due April 15th for the following fall.

Graduate Major Application

All applications should be turned in as e-mail attachments to wgs@uncg.edu. Please include “Cone Award – Grad Major” in the subject line.

Sally and Alan Cone WGSS Course Scholarship

Eligibility: Undergraduate or Graduate status; interest in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

Each semester, up to three $450 scholarships will be available for undergraduate or graduate students seeking to enroll in a Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies course. The applicant must be currently enrolled or have been admitted as an undergraduate or graduate student. Selection will be made on the basis of financial need, life and work experience, community service and/or leadership. The application must include an essay of no more than 500 words that addresses the selection criteria above and states, clearly and compellingly, the applicant’s interest in women’s and gender studies and how the course supports her/his goals.

Applications are due by April 15th for the fall and summer semesters and November 15th for the spring semester.

Course Scholarship Application

Sally and Alan Cone Scholarship to Students for Outstanding Work in WGSS

Eligibility: Undergraduate or Graduate status; Completed project in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

The WGSS Program will present a cash scholarship annually of at least $200 to at least one undergraduate and one graduate student whose projects are judged to make the most significant contribution to the field of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies.

Submissions must include:

  • any creative and/or intellectual contribution that meaningfully addresses women’s studies, feminism, or gender studies is eligible, including, but not limited to, an academic paper of any length, creative project, performance, program, or work of art.
  • a signature of support from a UNCG faculty member.
  • a cover sheet that includes the student’s address, phone number, and email address.

Committee members will evaluate each project based upon its relevance to women’s, gender, and sexuality studies and the quality, coherence, and significance of the project.

Project descriptions and supporting documents (papers, slides, recordings, programs, etc) must be submitted by April 15th for the fall and summer semesters and November 15th for the spring semester.

Sally and Alan Cone Student Grant for Special Projects in WGSS

Each year, grants of up to $500 will be awarded to UNCG students to support projects in women’s, gender, and sexuality studies that may require a limited amount of special funding. Possible uses for the grants include, but are not limited to, travel for research or artistic purposes (undergraduates may apply to travel to present at conferences, graduate students should apply for the travel award below if presenting at a conference), conference attendance (not presenting), research/creative project support in the form of supplies, photocopying, payment for laboratory participants or other expenses, or support of a community service project or internship. Preference will be given to those students who have not received the award previously. Students may not receive more than one special projects grant per year. Applications may not be made for reimbursement of expenditures from the past unless the applicant is in a process where expenses related to the project need to be prepaid. Requests for travel must be made prior to the trip.

Applications by Undergraduate Students must include:

  • the completed application form
  • a budget delineating the planned use of the requested funds (can include travel)
  • an essay or letter of one-to-two pages in length explaining the significance of the project for women’s studies, feminism, or gender studies; send any appropriate research paper(s) written that may help explain the project, if applicable
  • a signature of support from a UNCG faculty member.
  • a signature of support from a UNCG faculty advisor for the project.
  • if the application is to fund a conference presentation, submit the paper accepted for presentation and appropriate conference information; if the application is to fund conference attendance, specify in a short narrative how attendance supports the project you are working on

Materials should be submitted between August 15 and April 15 for a decision within a month, not counting times the university is closed for extended periods, such as Fall, Winter, and Spring Breaks.

Undergraduate Special Projects Application

Applications by Graduate Students must include:

  • the completed application form
  • a budget delineating the planned use of the requested funds (should not include travel to present at a conference – for that purpose apply for the travel grant below)
  • an essay or letter explaining the significance of the project for women’s studies, feminism, or gender studies; send any appropriate research paper(s) written that may help explain the project, if applicable, including an explanation of methodology or project development process. Include a brief bibliography or list of performances/exhibits where relevant.
  • a signature of support from a UNCG faculty member.
  • a signature of support from a UNCG faculty advisor for the project.
  • if the application is to fund conference attendance, specify in a short narrative how attendance supports the project you are working on. Graduate students may receive up to two conference travel awards during the course of her or his program at UNCG. Those students who are accepted to present at a conference must apply for funding from the Graduate Conference Presentation Fund rather than this grant fund.

Materials should be submitted between August 15 and April 15 for a decision within a month, not counting times the university is closed for extended periods, such as Fall, Winter, and Spring Breaks.

Sally and Alan Cone WGSS Graduate Student Travel Award for Conference Presentations

Eligibility: MA student in WGSS; simultaneous application for GSA travel funds; acceptance for presentation at a conference

Each year an award of up to $350 will be available to offset travel costs for a WGSS graduate student who is presenting papers or creative work at an academic conference. Students may not receive more than one award per year, and they may not receive more than two awards during their tenure in the graduate program. Only students who have already been accepted for a conference should apply, but they should apply before traveling. (If a graduate student is attending a conference, but not presenting, he or she should apply to the Special Projects Grant if seeking to secure travel support.) Applications should include an abstract of the presentation, up to one page in length, that clearly explains the argument of the paper or nature of the creative work and its relevance to the critical conversations in the field of WGSS. Applicants should also include a brief description of the conference (copies of the conference call for papers and/or the website homepage describing the conference are acceptable) and a budget clearly outlining how funds will be spent and the total amount requested. Finally, while it is not necessary to have secured GSA funds in order to be awarded a Cone grant, it is necessary to seek these GSA funds in addition to Cone funds. GSA will email you a confirmation email once you apply for their funds. Please submit a copy of that email with your Cone application.
